Is there asbestos in Water tanks?
Recently, I was looking for information on the question of "Is there asbestos in water tanks?". In particular I was searching for information on a man who claimed to be an engineer and who was removing water tanks in his neighbourhood. The man and his supervisor were removing the tanks one Saturday, removing the old ones and putting the new tanks in their place. They did not make any effort to ensure that the condition of the tanks did not affect the removal process and this was my focus.
On the way home, I saw the man and his supervisor walking past a dump site where they were tearing down a house. The man pointed at the dump site and said "there's asbestos here". This prompted me to go over and see what he had on his shirt. It was stained with what appeared to be the same asbestos as having been found on the water tanks. I asked him if he used a respirator, which he did. I also asked him if he knew that it was dangerous to work around asbestos and he replied, "Yes". Asbestos Removal Contractors
I looked
at the water tanks later and was really impressed by the fact that there was no
dust inside the water tanks, there were no marks of paint or cobwebs, nothing
to indicate that there had ever been any maintenance to these items. He removed
one of the water tanks and placed it on a table near his car. I asked him if
there was anything else that he could tell me about this water tank and his
reply was "I don't know". My conclusion was that he didn't want me to
know because I might point out to him that this was indeed an unsafe situation.
This man
was a property developer and I was interviewing one of his sub-contractors. The
man I was interviewing was a plumber. His question was, "Is there asbestos
in water tanks?". The plumber looked at me and said, "No". This
man went on to explain that he had been hired to work on the new development
project and he didn't feel comfortable about talking about certain matters
regarding the project in the water tank.
The question I asked the plumber was, "Is there asbestos in water tanks?". His answer was, "No". So after this conversation it became very apparent to me that I didn't want to ask any more questions concerning the subject of the water tanks as my goal from the onset was not to find out if there was asbestos in the water tanks, but to get some clarification on the part of the man who had just told me the story. It became very apparent that this man was indeed qualified to do the job that he was working on.
The next
question I asked the water management company involved in the development
project was, "Is there asbestos in the water?". Again the response
was, "No". And then it became very apparent to me that I didn't have
to ask the question anymore. I was tired of these guys trying to cover their
asses and run away from me. I was done.
But the
question still nags at you, "Is there asbestos in water tanks?". The
fact is that there are many places in your home where there may be traces of
asbestos and it does not necessarily mean that there is going to be a major
problem. In the plumbing industry, if the piping is more than 30 years old,
then it is probably safe to assume that there is some asbestos present. So,
don't let frustration get the best of you and don't allow frustration to take
over.
